5 Things to Add to Your Employee Motivation Checklist

For employers, motivating employees can sometimes be a tall order. In 2015, only 32 percent of employees reported that they were engaged, according to a Gallup poll. Reports from 2016 have shown little change. That means a majority of workers are disengaged in the work they do, which means those employees likely won’t be putting forth any extra effort beyond the bare minimum at their job. So, how do you motivate employees to care about their job and be more productive? We put together five simple things you should add to your employee motivation checklist to help you get started.


1: Express Genuine Gratitude

Underappreciated employees generally aren’t going to be inspired to work hard. When you express genuine gratitude for the work they perform, employees will want to do their work and do it well. Be sure to express gratitude to those who deserve it, not just for showing up, or that can seem insincere. When employees are recognized for going the extra mile, they’ll be more apt to continue the behavior.

2: Value Employee Opinions

When employees are looped in to important company decisions, they feel they are a part of the company. Asking for their feedback and sincerely valuing their input can help motivate employees to care about their work and their employer. This doesn’t mean as a business owner or part of upper-level management you have to run your company based on your employees’ wants, but carefully considering their thoughts can not only provide new insight, but it may help you make better business decisions. The effect on motivation will be apparent.


3: Improve Communication & Transparency

When you effectively communicate tasks, the state of the company, the industry, and the future, you create a transparent relationship in which management isn’t hiding information from its employees. This instills in employees a level of trust of their employer, which in and of itself can be a great motivator. Think about it, would you be compelled to work harder for an employer who left you in the dark or one that was open and honest?


4: Create Meaning & Purpose

Sometimes, employees aren’t motivated because they don’t have a reason to be. They’re simply completing their to-do lists and moving on. Communicating how, what, and why they are doing what they’re doing can help improve employee motivation. Further, providing a larger purpose can help employees see beyond the 9 to5.

5: Don’t Micromanage!

One of the most de-motivational things an employer can do is to micromanage his or her employees. You have to be able to trust them to do the jobs for which you hired them. Managing employees is an important skill, but micromanaging can convey distrust, which certainly won’t inspire employees to care about their work.


Overall, there are a multitude of things you can do to help motivate and inspire your employees, but you have to figure out what works best for you and your company. It’s important to stay in touch with your business and your employees. Assess what you’re currently doing, what hasn’t worked in the past, and what is working now, to improve employee motivation. After that, you can incorporate these tips and hopefully start seeing better results and attitudes from your employees.
